In ancient times, the constructions of the mountain temples on outskirts of Hangzhou often represent the characteristics of incorporation of streams.Linyin Temple is a well-known example. It was built along Lengquan Stream, meandering with its roadways, and drawing visitors from bustling Qiantang County to the serene Temple,an idyllic world. After Tang Dynasty,Temples like Hupao,Longjiang,Lian, are all recognized for their streams. The origins of the names and cultural significance of streams were associated with the constructions of the mountain temples. These streams not only provided the ideal natural setting to build temples, but also, they evolved with the temple construction.Ultimately, they became an indispensable component of the temple construction. Thus, the study of the interrelationship between mountain temples and streams becomes the basis of this paperThrough interpreting relevant historic literature, site investigations of mountain temples, streams and their natural environment, model analysis of the natural setting, this paper sorts out the historic and geographic context of the ancient Hangzhou temples.Three case studies are presented to analyze mountain temples and their evolution to form clusters with their streams. These precedent investigation unveils the technical and cultural values of the integration between temple construction and streams. The systematic research fills the blank in temple construction, discovers tremendous historic literature, and reveals the creativity of ancient people's construction activities, which achieves certain extent of academic contribution to the subject of relationship between traditional architecture and landscape.
