Research On The Application Rules Of Cooling Drugs Used By Zhongjing

Objectives: Through analyzing the cooling drugs recorded in Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber,this thesis intends to discuss the application rules of the cooling drugs used by Zhongjing,summarize its characteristics and academic essence,provide a theoretical support on Traditional Chinese Medicine literature basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods: Drugs with nature properties of greatly cold,cold,slightly cold,cool or slightly cool in Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber are chosen as subjects of study.Through analyzing the relevant original texts,prescriptions,combinations and dosage of cooling drugs,combining the ancient medical books and modern pharmacological researches,our research tries to explore and obtain the indications,pathogenesis,prescription characteristics and application rules of cooling drugs used by Zhongjing.Results: There are a total of 70 cooling drugs in Zhongjing's work,42 cooling drugs in Treatise on Febrile Diseases(48.3%),60 cooling drugs in Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber(38.7%),and 193 decoctions are involved.Drugs of a cold nature mainly used by Zhongjing are Radix Paeoniae Alba,Ginseng,Radix et Rhizoma Rhei,Radix Scutellariae,Fructus Aurantii Immaturus,Gypsum Fibrosum and Rhizoma Coptidis,which have the effects of clearing heat,cooling blood,eliminating the pathogenic,nourishing yin and resolving dampness to cure fu-organ syndrome,fluid-heat syndrome,dampness-heat syndrome,fire-heat syndrome,static blood-heat syndrome,yin deficiency and fluid consumption syndrome.In these prescriptions,cooling drugs such as Fructus Gardeniae,Semen Sojae Preparatum,Gypsum Fibrosum,Radix et Rhizoma Rhei,Radix Scutellariae,Radix Euphorbiae Kansui etc.are more compatible with Oryza Sativa L.,Radix Glycyrrhizae,Rhizoma Zingiberis,and Rhizoma Pinelliae to harmonize stomach.More than half of the cooling drugs are used as a combination with warming drugs in prescriptions,which may be considered by the later generations Zhongjing to be more detailed in the warming prescription and less for the cooling prescription.As pathogenic heat can cause fluid consumption,most of the cooling drugs are combined with purgative medicinal to emergent purgation and preserve yin,or yin-tonifying medicinal to nourish yin.Purgative medicinal like Radix et Rhizoma Rhei are often used to discharge heat through bowel movements.Cooling drugs are carefully used on patients who are weak or who shows stomach and spleen deficiency syndrome.The most common symptoms in texts which contain cooling drugs are fever,dysphoria and constipation.Most of the later medical books with cooling drugs records show similar patterns of Zhongjing's work,they present inheritance,development,innovation and evolution.Conclusion: Zhongjing not only expertise in using warming drugs but also cooling drugs.Most cooling drugs used are bitter and they can be used in a large variety syndromes and diseases.There are five characteristic of prescriptions which contain cooling drugs,cooling drugs are usually combine with cooling drugs to enhance effect,cooling drugs are often combine with warming drugs to restore balance,the spleen and stomach are carefully protected,Zhongjing focus on replenishing body fluid,heat can also be cleared using purgative method.The use of cooling drugs by Zhongjing makes a strong influence on later generations,and this proves that Zhongjing is also accomplished in treating warm diseases.
