Alberto Giacometti' s way of creating his paintings is based on the observation of the object and its space.He repeatedly paints people or objects till he is happy with his paintings through his understanding of the existence of what he paints and its context.He knows that existence and space together forms the picture of the reality.Therefore,his artworks surpass artworks that present the beauty of metaphysics(imagination only),and reflect the reality as much as they can.This dissertation will attempt to explain how Giacometti creates his artworks through his understanding of how sight,space and object interact with each other to bring about the reality that enables the artist to convert the reality to vivid paintings.Finally this article will provide some resolutions to the predicament that contemporary painting faces in the era of image media,and will attempt to suggest another direction for modern paintings.This dissertation comprises two parts.The first part(chapter 1-3)discusses the studies of Giacometti' s artworks in the regions where people speak French,English and Chinese.It aims to present how Existentialism,Positivism,Psychoanalysis,Metaphysics and Methodology in Aesthetics,and Truth of Art are used to explain Giacometti ' s process of creating his artworks.The second part(chapter 4-6)looks at Giacomettis Paintings in terms of sight,space and reality.First,we will look at the 'directness','intrinsic quality'and 'picture forming' in the artist' s work and conclude that he uses eye observation such as the observation of the unfocused area and the appearance of the world.This is what we believe to be the method that Alberto Giacometti uses to achieve the self-revealing effects in his paintings.Second,we will try to explain how the artist uses distance and size,assembling thoughts and escaping from ideas,dissolving the concept of space,and the relationship between space and time,so that we can appreciate the unconventional space effects in his artworks.By doing so,the artist takes painting into a new realm,and provides a more dynamic and realistic approach towards modern painting.Finally,we will attempt to show that the artist applies his understanding of tangible existence,the relationship between existence and void,and absolute truth,to identify the 'repeated amendments' and the skill of 'locking and unlocking the truth' in his paintings.The artist therefore enters the world that he has originally connected with,is able to reveal what is not immediately obvious to a casual observer.Thus he produces the full and vivid reality of the objects he paints.
