| In a world of globalized economy and virtualized media outlets, the fall of humanistic spirits and the lack of humanity qualities in young citizens have become a world-wide concern.Literary classics have been playing a significant role in re-constructing a core value system, discovering and nurturing the ethos of the time.As we know, media outlets serve as a liaison between literary works and their readers. In contemporary times, internet has replaced traditional paper media as an important means to keep and spread valuable traditional cultural heritages. In the meantime,it brings a tremendous change to the contents of these classics and the ways of their publication and distribution, deconstructing and re-constructing their structures, aesthetics, value functions and thus inevitably leading to different reader responses. The social and cultural environment which makes the distribution of literary classics in a virtual world possible, the features of internet distribution of literary classics, its positive and negative effects, its impact on the production and the consumption of contemporary culture, the urgent need for the distribution of classical works in a virtual space, the alteration in readers’ acceptance as well as the present development of the internet distribution of Chinese literary classics. The internet distribution of literary classics is like a double-edged sword, which exerts divided and two-folded influence on Chinese literature. The present dissertation attempts to anatomize how the internet distribution deconstructs and then re-constructs the classical canon of Chinese literature. On the one hand, the internet distribution creates a huge reservoir of aesthetic resources, stimulating mass carnivals, turning a new page in aesthetic creation, integrating aesthetic desires of the artists with the commercial needs of the cultural industries, therefore reflecting the democratization and the popularization of classical aesthetic modes in an era of internet.Furthermore,it epitomizes the democratization of an elite culture, the entertainization of the social functions of literature,as well as the pluralization of values, which all,in one way or another, invite the conversion of literary criticism. Finally, this study analyses the contemporary presentation and the characteristics of the internet distribution of Chinese literary classics-the visual and audio presentation and the filmic narrative methods appeal to the general masses, who embrace these classics anew.On the other hand, the internet distribution of the classical works undermines the authoritative status of these works and causes their disenchantment in the process of commercial reproduction and distribution.Meanwhile, literary criticism begins to bear new characteristics, giving rise to a crisis of divided and even polarized responses.Secondly, the internet distribution leads to an exhaustion of artistic function and aesthetic values-the lapse of social functions, the loss of meaning, the over-interpretation and the prevalence of a fast-food culture.Thirdly, one major characteristic of internet distribution is re-production.The parody rearrangement, the carnivalistic representation, the subversion of themes as well as the entertainized criticism can bring forth nothing other than the alienation of these classical works. How the internet distribution of Chinese literary classics can be improved to build a healthy environment of production, distribution and mass acceptance,to enhance the contemporaneity of interpretation and the best appropriation of the good effects. The means and strategies of improving internet distribution include the perfection of the channels of distribution, the respect for acceptance psychology and the market rules,a focus on the modernity and the nationality of these reproduced works. The significance and the necessity of such improvement are also discussed in this part. |
