Translating Chinese Classical Poetry Into English

Chinese classical poetry is the treasure of world literature. With a highly condensed form, it intends to provide readers with great space of association and say most in the fewest words. Therefore, it attracts the interests of the translators both at home and abroad. Due to the special literary form of poetry itself, despite a fair amount of successful practice conducted by translators, there is still a great controversy over the translation of Chinese classical poetry. On the basis of deconstruction theory and Skopos theory, this thesis attempts to probe into the translation of Chinese classical poetry into English from the perspective of translator's subjectivity. In its main body, the description and analysis of the impact exerted by translator's subjectivity on the rendition of Chinese classical poetry is conducted from three aspects, namely, the translation of image, the rendition of metaphors and the conveyance of musicality. In addition, some examples and their corresponding versions are adopted to prove that on account of the different final understanding of the original poem, translators' literary genres, translating purposes, historical times and linguistic and cultural contexts lead to the diversified versions, which are still considered to be loyal to the original.
