Fire is an important part of human civilization in the long history of human development. It has contributed to the evolution of human beings. The use of fire in the long-term production practice of the ancient people is extending, not only symbolizes human beings from ignorance to civilization, but also reflects the evolution of human beings from material civilization to spiritual civilization. In Chinese,“?” is a basic word of vocabulary,it's original meaning is generate light and flame when objects are burning. In Vietnamese, there are two different expression formats to describe the state of the substance, the following are: “l?a” – is a basic word in Vietnamese vocabulary, can exist independently;another is “h?a”– is a language unit of Han Viet words. It's a Vietnamese unit borrowed from ancient Chinese. This language unit can not be used independently, and often needs other collocations to form Vietnamese basic vocabulary. In the long history of development,Chinese “?” and Vietnamese “l?a”and “h?a” have developed rich meanings based on the original meaning. From the perspective of semantic category,we can find the correspondence and difference between the semantic category of Chinese "fire" and Vietnamese “l?a” and “h?a”.At the same time,we can find some problems related to cognition from members of their semantic category.Because different languages have different forms of expression, these differences reflect different ways in which different ethnic groups and different associations grasp the language and reflect the objective world in their own language,so different ways of grasping the world will form the unique cultural value of different languages. The way to express the same semantic category in various languages is still an urgent research topic in contemporary linguistics. The main content of this dissertation is a comparative study of semantic category and semantic system features between Chinese “ ? ”and Vietnamese “l?a”,“h?a”.Based on the theories of cognitive linguistics, lexical semantics and cultural linguistics, this dissertation acomprehensive and detailed comparative analysis of the semantic categories of fire in Chinese and Vietnamese. This dissertation analyzes and compares four categories: First, the natural characteristics of fire and its semantic category.Second, the semantic category of people, things and phenomena of fire.Third, the category of fire events and their generation are extremely(including: positive and negative).Fourth, fire represents the semantic category of the human spiritual world(including: emotional state, character and behavior, cultural value, and medical theory).Hope our research results can provide some new contributions.
