Technique,Labor And Capital:An Enthnography Of Seafood Of A Southeast Island

This dissertation is mainly about the abalone farming of a southeast island called PingTan,exhibts the key elements of abalone industry:labor,capital and technique,and examines how the increasing popular abalone farming has reshaped and reshaping the local fishing community.Further more,the dissertation focus on the relationship between the abalone farming economy and local community,tries to figure out why the abalone farming,which labeld as "risky,profitable,and costy",get involved in the process of rapid urbanization and echos to the globalization,and how the people related behind the abalone farming activities.More importantly,in the context of increasingly complex aspects,this dissertation weighs the relationship between marine ecology,marine society,and human-sea relations.Although it seems the newly emergerd abalone aquaculture of the traditional fishing communities of the southeastern China is the study object,but this research is actually an attempt to demonstrate the connection and interaction of the individual,fishing community and the nationwide even global market,and historical process itself.Abalone farming is kind of reaction or strategy which responds to the unstoppable tide of globalization and the process of modernity and the resulting social changes.As traditional seafood,abalone has been put on the diet for a lone time,and also used as ethnic medicine.With the maritime knowledge expands,abalone along came into the local written system,which aim at developing the local "ideology".However,the historical abalone farming recently became the popular program is surely not coincidence.It not only reflects the history of the southeast China,but also accords with the nature of the local society,which known as found of risky,seeking fortune.Therefore,abalone farming became the dream maker for the local people.Comparing the other parts,produce is the key of the abalone farming industry without doubt,and the technique,capital,labor is the core.And considering the reality,household is the main producing unit.And with the influx of workers,cultural encounters was inevitable.And the disappear of friendly loans also indicates the change of the local community.As the abalone aquaculture created an array of new rich in southeast China,the costal region and the isolated island get connected,thus the people and the fishing communities related by abalone farming.And this is why it is influential on local community.
