Modern historical novels refer to a kind of literary style in which historic atmosphere and historical details have an isomorphism relationship with historical reality, and modernity has been transformed and created on the basis of historical reality. The research object of this dissertation is Tang Haoming's three long historical novels since the 1990s,which are based on the characters of the late Qing Dynasty. These three long historical novels are Zeng Guofan,Kuangdai Yicai Reading and Zhang Zhidong. This dissertation starts with Tang Haoming and his novels.Discussion and analyse are developed from the perspective of society, history and literature. The dissertation is divided into seven parts. The main contents of each part are as follows:The dissertation firstly makes a distinction between the concepts of "ancient historical novels" and "modern historical novels",and points out that there are differences between them. Then the basic theoretical problems such as the basic features, social function and aesthetic value of "modern historical novels" are expatiated. And the dissertation mainly traces the changes of historical narration of three historical figures(Zeng Guofan,Yang Du and Zhang Zhidong)who have been controversial under the influence of the "Enlightenment Thought" since modern times. At the same time, through exploring the modernization path of Chinese traditional culture under the background of globalization in the new era and the unique significance of the historical novels in the late Qing Dynasty, the dissertation explores many aspects of Tang Haoming's historical novels which were published in late Qing Dynasty, such as subject consciousness, ideological connotation, traditional resources and values evaluation.Secondly,by reviewing the history of modem historical novels, especially the history of Tanghaoming's historical novels in the new period, the author points out the overall situation and existing problems of the current historical novels. At last, the research direction and method of this dissertation are explained in detail. The first chapter of the dissertation,"thought liberation and social transformation",mainly analyzes the motivation of Tanghaoming's historical novels from three aspects:the gradual liberation of social thought promotes the further loosening of the history sensitive subject in the literary expression, and the rise of "culture fever" and the thought of searching for roots provides the reference resources for the national cultural expression of Tanghaoming's novel. The urgency of globalization and the modernization of traditional culture set a broad world background for Tanghaoming's creation and provided the motive force for the literary expression of cultural modern transformation. The second chapter of the dissertation focuses on Tanghaoming's self-consciousness of subjectivity in the creation of historical novels, and divides this consciousness into three aspects:first, the freedom to make a rational fiction and imagination in awe of the true historical attitude, and second, holding an awe heart towards traditional culture and penetrate this cultural responsibility into the creation of the three works.Third, insisting on the spiritual analysis of the historical characters and making dialogues with them. The third chapter of the dissertation,"Entering the WTO and cultural reconstruction",focuses on the ideological and cultural connotation contained in the novel.First of all,it analyzes how Tanghaoming expressed modern intellectuals'tortuous process in saving country in the Qing Dynasty. Then discusses how Tanghaoming's novel promoted the characteristics of Hunan regional culture in the local perspective, and how to express the modern transformation and survival of traditional culture in the face of Western challenges. The fourth chapter of the dissertation,"Paradigm Transformation and Classical Succession",mainly analyzes Tanghaoming's learning experience from ancient Chinese literature resources in many aspects, such as the full use of "historical literature"resources, the conscious inheritance of classical novel resources and the effective utilization of folk literature resources. The key point is the comprehensive reference and innovative development of Tanghaoming's historical novel on the traditional literary resources. In order to sort out literary value and Cultural significance, the fifth chapter,"the comparison between types and differences between styles",compares Tang Haoming's historical novels with those of other influential contemporary writers from perspective of case study and comparative study. In this paper, the author makes a comparison with the historical novels of the Eryue River to investigate the interesting difference between them.By comparing with Gaoyang's historical novels, the author investigates the commonness and individuality of their themes in the late Qing Dynasty.Through comparison with Liu Sifen,s historical novels, the author examines the similarities and differences between them in literary historical novels. In the conclusion,in order to lay a solid foundation for the further prosperity of historical novels in the new century, based on the background of the new century in which Chinese literature is going into the world, the author summarizes the whole dissertation, analyzes the classical meaning of Tanghaoming's historical novels and the possibility of popularizing his creative experience, and also addresses some of the defects and shortcomings of his own creation, including some errors in the ideological connotation, some weaknesses in the narrative art of some chapters and the formality of language expression.
