In recent years, international spreading of Chinese language has been increasingly valued as part of China's soft power strategy.China's national image is an integral part of the strategy as well. Both of them have attracted extensive attention from researchers. However, research on the correlation between the two is very rare.In view of this situation, this paper takes five countries in Southeast Asia, namely,Thailand,Vietnam,Myanmar,Malaysia, and Indonesia as the research scope, and explores the correlation of Chinese language spreading and public perception of China's national image among the five nations.Through a questionnaire survey of more than a thousand people in the five countries, combined with field surveys, content analysis, and narrative research, public perception of China's national image across the five countries has been thoroughly investigated, and a systematic analysis of the elements of Chinese language spreading across the five countries has been conducted.By employing the method of horizontal comparison, the correlation between Chinese language spreading and public perception of China's national image is revealed. The research in this paper shows that the five countries in Southeast Asia generally perceive China as a great country, but there are also differences in generations and ethnic groups. The public perception of China 's national image can be divided into three levels:high, medium, and low.The public thinks more highly of Chinese culture than Chinese government and Chinese people, and thinks little of Chinese products. The public perception of China's national image among the five countries in Southeast Asia can be classified as three types:economic-and cultural-driven,economic-driven and under-driven.There is a positive correlation between Chinese language spreading among the five countries and overall public perception of China's national image. It is reflected in the fact that people with Chinese learning experience have a significantly better perception of China's national image than those without. The learning duration and proficiency of Chinese language is also positively related to the awareness of China's national image. The image of Chinese language and Confucius Institutes has the strongest correlation with Chinese culture and thus play an important role in enhancing it.However, people's linguistic ideology in some countries is greatly affected by politics. The over-reliance of the image of Chinese language and Confucius Institutes on politics has become a barrier to local Chinese language spreading. In addition, some problems arising from Chinese language spreading among five countries in Southeast Asia are likely to have an adverse effect on constructing China's national image. This research found that the basic development path of Chinese language learners' perception of China's national image includes five stages:preliminary cognition, reinforcement and adjustment, cognitive conflict, transfer of thinking mode, and identity reconstruction. The power of Chinese language as a thinking tool should be taken seriously.Learners' conversion of thinking mode to the target language will have a decisive influence on their perception of China's national image. The research also found that Chinese language spreading modes among the five countries in Southeast Asia will affect public perception of China's national image.Different value-oriented and practice-based models of Chinese language spreading assume diverse roles in building China's national image.Malaysia has the best perception of China's national image, with Thailand and Indonesia ranking the second,Myanmar and Vietnam the third. The effort of local governments and overseas Chinese community in Chinese language spreading of the five countries is positively related to the ranking above. The contents, methods, and channels of Chinese language spreading all have an effect on public perception of China's national image.Among them, overseas Chinese's heritance of language and culture has a significant impact on the host country's perception of China's national image. It not only has a direct impact on the status of the host country in the Chinese language spreading circle, but also influences the entire country's public perception of China's national image.Based on the analysis and discussion of the above research results, this paper proposed a theory-"Value-oriented theory of Chinese language spreading",a concept-"the power of Chinese language spreading in overseas Chinese community",a set of paths-"the development path of Chinese language learners'perception of China's national image" and three new angles for Chinese language image construction-"innovative language"," language with the most economic value" and "the most attractive language",and explored the research methods of the correlation between Chinese language spreading among five countries in Southeast Asia and public perception of China's national image. Finally, this paper made relevant suggestions on how Chinese language spreading can contribute to the strategic needs of China's national image construction among the five countries in Southeast Asia.
