Research On Production And Communication Of Ethnic Minority Films In New China

Ethnic minority films play an unique and important role in new China's film history.Previous studies focused mainly on these films' artistic characteristics and cultural values.This thesis,however,tries to explore ethnic minority films from the point of view of mass culture combining political economics,sociology,communication,film studies,cultural anthropology and so on,using the textual method and the contextual method.The thesis researches five aspects of ethnic minority films,including production,distribution,screening,watching and evaluation,which places production and communication of ethnic minority films in economic environment and cultural policy,aiming revealing how this art form interacts with other social systems and how they effect each other.To begin with,there is a preliminary theoretical frmaework,from which we discuss the social relations of production and communication of Chinese ethnic minority films.The dissertation can be divided into seven parts.The introduction provides the background object,research review method.The second to the sixth is the main part of the thesis.The first three chapters deals with the production of ethnic minority films,which could be delivered as followed: chapter 2 takes a retrospect in ethnic minority films' production of the planned economy period;chapter 3 turns to the market economy;chapter 4 goes furth and closer to the ethnic minority films' production after China's entry to WTO which is deemed as new period.These three chapters argue that,say,innovation of film concept,as well as changes in production system,proved to be tremendous affect on production pattern and aesthetic form of ethnic minority films.On the other hand,the research demonstrates that ethnic minority films have received much government subsidies,since equally such kind of production play a positive role in propagating state ideology,which,nevertheless,could only be achieved through economic levers and film narrative,reflecting the law of socialist political economy and film aesthetics.The following two chapters deal with communication of ethnic minority films,including dubbing,marketing,consuming,reviewing,cross-cultural flowing,etc.The government vigorously promote their communication by film festivals,and state film projects,in order to make them become "cultural exception" in the commercial film environment.However,we still can't ignore that economic and market mechanism has play a decisive role in film communication.In this part,audience acceptance and interpretation about film products will be the focus because the audience could initiative construct films' meaning.For those ethnic minority films which market ability is very weak,film criticism play an important role in promoting and guideing watch.In the field of ethnic minority films' criticism,the official discourse,academic discourse and folk discourse usually have different angle,but there is national discourse behind them.In cross-cultural communication,the thesis puts forward some strategies for reducing cultural discount from the aspects of film culture construction and communication mode,for example,ethnic films must improve their narrative capacity and enhance the drama;when we explore the problems about cultural conflicts,values remodeling,identity and other issues,we should put them in the globalization context.The conclusion provides a realistic path of ethnic minority films development on the basis of theoretical generalization in the former chapters.The significance of the theoretical framework is that study films from their production and communication environment,and regard them as a subject in the film industry and commercial development.At last,my paper come to conclusion that it can be coordinated between the path of political economics and the path of culture and art.It can be said that the study of the thesis has pioneering significant for the development of ethnic minority films' study.
