The Effects Of Trust On The Interpersonal Conflict Information Processing

Researchers have identified trust as a basic trait of cooperative and harmonious interpersonal relationship,by mainly focusing on the relation between trust and interpersonal cooperative behavior.However,with the growth and rapid changes of greater China,social network has been transformed from acquaintances to strangers.In its turn it leads to trust crisis,as original trust relationship has gradually been disintegrated and new trust relationship has not been established yet.Currently,interpersonal conflicts caused by trust ctisis accur frequently in modern society,by even leading to violent intergroup conliftcs.In face of grimreality,however,researchers have much to learn about the interaction between trust and another extreme interpersonal relationships raising interpersonal conflicts.Based on the previous research,the main objective of this paper is to construct the information processing theory of interpersonal conflicts,and to highlight importantant role of interpersonal trust in information processing during interpersonal conflicts,including attention processing,perception processing and reactive monitoring processing.This paper divides interpersonal trust into two dimentions,trait trust and state trust,both of which are introduced into the information processing of interpersonal conflicts and manipulated in different ways.For trait trust,as a subject variable,the current research uses interpersonal trust survey to control the different levels of trait trust.Lexical priming paradigm was used to control the levels of state trust.In order to explore interpersonal conflict processing,it uses classical dot-probe paradigm and social game task,in which tasks not only use reaction time and accuracy as behavioral indicators,but also the averge amplitude of ERPs' components as electrical indicators.The main findings of the present dissertation are as follows:(1)Trust affects conflict-related attention biases.Specially,at the behavioral level,high levels of trait trustors show the attention bias toward the different kinds of interpersonal conflict information.For general subjects,they are more sensitive to conflict information under the condition of low levels of state trust than that of high levels,however,under the condition of high levels of state trust,they maintain the attention toward the high conflict information significantly longer than that of low conflict information.Also,high levels of trait trustors show the attention vigilance toward the high conflict information and difficultly disengagement from it under the condition of low levels of state trust.At the ERPs' level,the influence of trait trust is mainly reflected in the average amplitude of N170 and P300.So based on this,this paper proposes the three-stage model of the trait trust's effects on attention bias toward interpersonal conflict information.(2)Trust affects the perception of interpersonal conflict information.Specially,in terms of static conflict information in Study ?,when high levels of trait trustors face high-conflict information,they perceive significantly stronger conflict and react more fastly than low levels of trait trustors.Also,when the general individuals face non-conflict information,they perceive significantly stronger conflict under the condition of low levels of state trust than that of high levels of state trust.In addition,when different levels of trait trustors face conflict-related information,they perceive the significantly different degree of conflict,which are affected by the state trust priming.In terms of conflict information during interpersonal interaction in Study ?,at the behavioral level,the response accuracy of non-conflict information perception is significantly higher than that of conflict information,as well as the high levels of trait trustors' response accuracy of conflict information is significantly higher than the low levels of trait trustors'.When general individuals face conflict information,the accuracy under the condition of low levels of state trust is significantly higher than that of high levels of state trust,and the former's reaction time is significantly shorter than the later's.At the ERPs' level,the influence of trait trust is mainly reflected in the average amplitude of N170,N270,P300 and LPP.So based on this,this paper proposes the three-stage model of the trait trust's effects on interpersonal conflict information perception.(3)Trust affects the response to interpersonal conflict information.Specially,at the behavioral level,the main effect of trait trust is not significant.However,for general individuals,the main effect of state trust is significant.Subjects choose “keep” much more frequently and fastly than choose “share”.The interaction between trait trust and state is significant,which is reflected by the reaction time.At the ERPs' level,the average of P300 shows that interaction between trait trust and electrodes is significant.To sum up,combining with the previous research,this paper puts forward the three-stage model of interpersonal conflict information processing,which mainly includes attention bias toward conflict-related information,perception processing of conflict information,and the reaction monitoring processing.For the first time this study introduces both trait trust and state trust into different stages of conflict information processing,and it reveales that two types of trust both play vital role in conflict information processing.Specially,at the behavioral level,the state trust has more remarkable effects than the trait trust.At the ERPs' level,based on the findings of trait trust effects,this paper presents a three-stage model of attention processing to interpersonal conflict information,which includes the early stage of automation,the later stage of automation,and the controlled-process stage.Moreover,this paper proposed the the three-stage model of the trait trust's effects on perception of interpersonal conflict information,which includes automatic processing stage,conflict detection stage and conflict assessment stage.Thus,based upon the effects of trust on the interpersonal conflicts information processing,our study suggests that it can reduce conflicts and increase cooperation behavior through improving the state trust in current situation,which leads to establish harmonious relationships.
