Research On The Chinese Image In Hollywood Movies

The appearance of Chinese image came into Western society can be traced back to around 1250.In the late Middle Ages,the image of "Continent of Genghis Khan" illustrated in the work The Travels of Marco Polo(around 1298)had a great influence,and became a model of Western society’s imagination of the collective memory of the mysterious Oriental China at that time.The image of China with great land and resources,the prosperity of the city,wealth...were shaped as adult paradise in Western society.However,under the perspective of the West,the image of China had a profound change due to the influence of multiple factors such as ideology,politics,economy,and culture.As the most popular form of cultural communication art,movies have become one of the best ways for the United States to describe and shape the image of China.Among them,the Hollywood movies were the representatives,which structured a variety of China.The instrumentality,propaganda,and dominance of Hollywood and its movies have gradually attracted the attention of the US government since the beginning of 20 th century(around the 1920s),and late have become the emissary of the national image of the US and a major tool and strategy for government propaganda.The image of China showed up constantly in Hollywood movies,and presented different features in different historical periods along with the development of Hollywood movies.This article focuses on the following 3 aspects when deeply analyzing the image of China in the Hollywood movies: 1.How the image of China in Hollywood movies is generated.This research in-depth analyzed how the image of China is generated,produced and shaped in the Hollywood movies as a "cultural others" about the Western society.2.In Hollywood movies,how does the discourse tradition of the image of China continue,and what triggered the changes in different historical stages,so as to reveal a certain stable cultural program in the history of image of China in Hollywood movies.3.How does the image of China run under the industrial system of Hollywood movies.It is to reveal that it not only interprets the significance of image of China in the Western modern concept system,but place the image of China in a powerful discourse system of Hollywood,thereby demonstrating American cultural hegemonism.Therefore,when appreciating the American Hollywood movies with Chinese elements,it is necessary for the Chinese audiences to take a closer look at the deeper image of China under the lens of Hollywood movies;through comparing,and sorting out the characteristics of image of China presented in Hollywood movies from 20th-21 st century,it is possible to conduct a deeper analysis and research on the reasons and essences of the changes of China’s image in Hollywood movies,helping us to see through the proposes,strategies and measures of American cultural hegemonism,providing a more profound understanding on the global pattern in the process of world integration,and fully reflecting on the global competitiveness of Chinese culture.This article is mainly divided into 5 parts.In the introduction,it explains the research background,value,research status and approaches.Chapter 1 enters from the angle of ideology,and in-depth analyzes the historical reasons and programmed internal causes of the "image of China" under the Western perspective of the others in Hollywood movies.Chapter 2 systematically analyzes the image of China construction recourses in Hollywood movies;and conducts one by one discussions from theme story,cultural symbols,movie resources,natural and human landscapes.Chapter 3 describes the appearance and characteristics of "image of China" in Hollywood movies for the past 100 years from character image,anthropomorphic image,field,space and landscape image.Chapter 4 analyzes the influential factors of the construction of the image of China in Hollywood movies form the perspectives of political factor,economic factor and artistic factor.Finally,thought the research in the image of China in Hollywood movies under the background of globalization,this article demonstrates about how China can absorb the advanced Western culture and movie industry experiences,in order to tell better Chinese stories in Chinese national movies,and output excellent Chinese cultures.
