This paper studies the syntactic representation differences of verbs in the aspect category in Morden Chinese and the semantic movivation behind them.It focuses on the gradience of verbs in the aspects of continuous, perfect, experiential and delimitivity.Based on the theory of event semantics and event structure and the two-dimensional analysis framework of semantic features of verbs' aspect, which was proposed by Croft in 2012.This paper extracts fifteen groups of semantic features of verbs, does quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis, and proposes and verifies the semantic gradience hypothesis of categorical verbs in Modern Chinese. That fifteen groups are[±start][±bounded][±durative][±cyclic][±incremental][±directed][±reversible][±semel factive][±inherent][±stative][±result][±live][±controlled][±independent][±moving].Through further analysis and comparison of the data, this paper not only constructs the verb realization models of aspects of continuous, perfect, experiential and delimitivity, but also constructs the general model of verb realization in aspects. This paper holds that there is a hierarchical relationship between verb semantics and syntactic forms, namely, gradience. The difference in the form of echelon mainly comes from the difference in verb semantics, which is the result of the joint action of different semantic feature variables.Based on the two-dimensional decomposition of the time and qualitative state of the verb semantics, synthesizing the process of the event and the participants of the event, the first chapter extracts fifteen groups of semantic feature variables related to the verb events, and further clarifies the six common factors with high explanatory power that affect the realization of the verbs in aspects. The six common factors are controlling, process, change, boundary, situation and path. The second, third, fourth and fifth chapters respectively study the realization of verbs in aspects of continuous, perfect, experiential and delimitivity, and construct the verb gradience. The gradience in aspect of continuous is temporary state verbs<directed activity verbs<undirected cyclic verbs<procedural accomplishment verbs. The gradience in aspect of perfect is unprocedural accomplishment verbs<continuable variable verbs<undirected activity verbs<procedural accomplishment verbs. The gradience in aspect of experiential is cyclic unvariable verbs<noncyclic variable verbs<undirected activity verbs<procedural accomplishment verbs. The gradience in aspect of delimitivity is cyclic semelfactive achievement verbs<achievable continuable verbs<variable verbs<procedural accomplishment verbs. It is found that there are similarities between different verb gradiences in aspects. The fifteen groups of semantic characteristic variables contained in different aspects and levels of operation show the change of one side and the other or synchronous change, and also show a certain regularity. The complex functional relationship between the semantic features of verbs reflects the connection between different aspects and answers some controversial questins about the meaning expressed by different aspects. This paper constructs the realization models of verbs in aspects of continuous, perfect, experiential and delimitivity, which provides quantifiable basis for predicting the realization of verbs.Based on the different relations between verb gradiences in different aspects, the sixth chapter constructs a comprehensive prediction model of verb gradience and builds a relatively systematic sequence of verb gradience in aspects, which is non-aspect verbs<continuable achievement verbs<continuable variable verbs<variable nonincremental accomplishment verbs<procedural accomplishment verbs. This cascade sequence not only shows the gradation change from non aspect realized verbs to aspect realized verbs, but also shows the gradation change from the core to the edge of nonaspect realized verbs and aspect realized verbs, and explains the rule and exception between the semantic meaning and aspect realized verbs. It is found the semantic features of most verbs are fuzzy, which can be expressed in two or more aspects of verbs at the same time. This shows the flexible mechanism of verb semantic and syntactic representation. The last part is the summary of the whole paper, which summarizes the source, verification ideas and methods of the assumption of different gradience of verbs in aspects, and summarizes the main viewpoints and research findings of this paper from four aspects.First of all,the study of verbs in aspects needs the combination of internal and external perspectives.Secondly, the status of each semantic feature variable in aspects is unequal. The feature of[+durative]is the most significant feature in the aspect of continuous. The feature of[+bounded]is the most significant feature in the aspects of perfect and delimitivity. The feature of[+reversible]is the most significant feature in the aspect of experiential.Third, there are not only differences but also similarities in the gradience of different aspects. Finally, there is a significant difference between the Modern Chinese and the Western European language. This paper also points out that the trajectory of the gradience of the verbs in aspects,as well as the influence of syntax and context, can be futher studied in the future.
