The Research On Chinese Nationalism In The Process Of Media Modernization

In this dissertation,the author try to investigate the process of China's modernization and nation building through narrating the rising and development of nationalism in the modern media.At the end of the 19^th century,when the newspapers as mass printing media came into being in China,constructing the public sphere of Chinese people,an imagined community of Chinese nation state was undergoing,while the controversy between Constitutionalist and Revolutionaries reflected the disparate concepts of cultural nationalism and political nationalism.Being a kind of image media,the movie reconstructed the communication system of Chinese society profoundly at the beginning of 20^th century,spread the information to the crowd out of the metropolis and intellectuals.The movie of anti-Japanese war propagated in the huge country brought the people from different spaces into the same environment,that lead the Chinese people form the same historical memory about the war,which consolidated the state concept,defeated the conspiracy of Japanese to deconstruct China,this period is the formation stage of the Chinese nation state.The internet,born in the end of 20^th century in China,reconstructed the communication system once again.The communication body was in the track of popularization,and the controversy between the cultural nationalism and political nationalism was still rising,which challenged the traditional narrative of Chinese nation.Reviewing the Chinese history since the second half of 19^th century,the development of communication methods resulted in the reconstruction of the society,which challenged the nation building as well.In this dissertation,the author divided the Chinese modern history into3 stages by the media ecology,that is printing age,image age and internet age,researched the development process of media by the paradigm of modernization.Focusing on the Chinese nationalism in the view of media ecology,the author investigate the manifestation of nationalism in various stage and different times,the interaction between the media and society as well as the media's impact on the social construction,in order to elucidate the function of media in the course of nation building,and the role of nationalism in the modern China's formation.
