With the continuous development of China’s social economy, problem of overwork has become increasingly prominent, and even has become part of the staff’s work normalcy. In recent years, young people due to overwork died on the job, these things were visible before the eyes.Compared with the developed countries in the field of overwork research results,China’s involvement in the field started late.Since 2000,some scholars began to pay attention to the field and engage in related research. Many scholars in China have done a lot of research on the causes of overwork. Most of the perspective include management, economics, sociology, psychology and so on.However, the consequences of overwork have always been in the blank zone of research. This paper is based on this, mainly for the problem of overwork caused by the economic losses to carry out relevant research.Combined with the methods of literature research, economic model analysis, empirical analysis, comparative analysis and other methods. And using the method of total output value, human capital law and willingness to pay, this paper makes an empirical and case analysis on the economic loss of overwork.Based on the choice of labor input, labor input and output, safety and health cost benefit analysis, life risk agent theory and other related theories,to explore a series problems. The following conclusions are obtained:1.The work efficiency follows the "inverted U" curve with the working timeThe highest point of work efficiency is at second hours, and then decreased with the passage of time, and showing a cliff style decline trend at the second hour to last.In the overtime stage, the "inverted V" trend was presented. It slipped rapidly after reaching the highest point in an initial hour.2.Overwork and long working time have a great impact on employee productivityWhen the frequency of physical and mental fatigue reaches a number of times a month and above, its impact on employee productivity is very prominent, and its total contribution rate is more than 70%.The influence of labor time on employee productivity is more complex, and the trend of "inverted U" is obvious.Employees’ productivity will be significantly affected by less than 7 hours and more than 11 hours of daily work.3.The loss of productivity accounts for a large proportion of the total economic loss of overworkThe wage loss caused by overwork is 440 billion yuan. And the range of productivity loss is 0.23~0.62 trillion yuan. Therefore, the scope of the indirect economic loss is 0.67~1.06 trillion yuan, and the proportion of the total economic loss is between 51.76%~62.98%,which is larger. The direct economic loss caused by overwork is 625 billion 445 million yuan. The medical and medical expenses and the cost of prevention are 300 billion yuan and 310 billion yuan respectively, while the proportion of the total loss are close between them.4.The total economic loss of overwork accounts for a higher proportion of GDP in ChinaThe total economic loss of overwork is between 1.30~1.69 trillion yuan.According to the scale of China’s GDP in 2015,the proportion is between 1.89%~2.45%.If the estimates of economic losses such as "overwork death" and "overwork depression" are added, the proportion should be between 1.97%~2.58%.After multiple validation, especially in comparison with the results from Japan, the scope of the estimation is more reasonable.5.The situation of overwork in China is close to JapanWhether it’s the distribution structure of long time labor or the correlation between working time and economic development level,or the survey results of scholars’ overwork degree, the situation of overwork in China is close to Japan. In comparison with the results of the study in Japan, the estimate of this study is more reasonable. But we can also see that the extreme performance of our employees in overwork, such as "koroshi","overworked depression" and the economic loss caused by them are obviously better than those in Japan.6.Overwork and long working time have a great impact on economic lossThere is a linear relationship between overwork and economic loss, while trend is "inverted U" between working time and economic loss. When the frequency of physical and mental fatigue reaches several times a month, its impact on economic loss is very prominent. When the labor time is less than 7 hours per day and more than 10 hours,it will cause more economic losses. In particular, the daily labor time over 11 hours has a great harm to economic loss.
