Abstract/Summary:
Factors impacting asthma outcomes in African American living in two distinct Chicago communities were examined. A study of the factors that impact asthma action plan usefulness was carried out using a descriptive correlational approach. A modified Self Regulation Model served as the conceptual framework guiding this inquiry.;A total of 19 existing study questions related to demographics, asthma outcomes, asthma action plan use, asthma action plan helpfulness, and economic factors were analyzed. Analysis of existing data was conducted on 99 African American adults with asthma in two Chicago communities; Roseland and North Lawndale. Information on demographics, asthma action plan use, asthma outcomes and economic factors was analyzed for these groups.;Residents with asthma action plans were similar to residents without asthma action plans with regards to asthma outcomes. Females had poorer asthma outcomes with and without asthma action plans. Residents with lower education levels had poorer asthma outcomes independent of their asthma action plan use.
