Abstract/Summary:
This study describes the relationship between expectations regarding aging and resilience in a diverse sample of 415 adults ages 45 to 64, and 65 and older of White (non-Hispanic/Latino), Hispanic/Latino, and African American race/ethnicity. The 12-item Expectations Regarding Aging (ERA-12) and the 25-item Resilience Scale surveys were utilized. The results showed no significant relationship between expectations regarding aging and either age or race/ethnicity nor between resilience and either age group or race/ethnicity. A significant relationship was found between expectations regarding aging and resilience. The strength of this relationship differed depending upon race/ethnic group. A significant relationship was found between expectations regarding aging and both health status and education. A significant relationship was also found between resilience and both health status and income.;Conclusion: The ability to access the powerful concepts of expectations regarding aging and resilience are available to both age groups and the three race/ethnic groups in this study. Additionally, resilience can be maintained over one's lifespan. One's health status and level of education may influence an individual's expectations regarding aging, as well as one's health status in income may influence one's level of resilience.
