Abstract/Summary:
The role of women in ministry is a greatly debated topic in the church. This study explored men's perceptions towards women in ministry in the Church of God in Christ to understand better the meaning assigned to women in ministry and the factors they perceived to be contributors or barriers to the advancement of women in ministry. It also explored the idea of women serving as pastors in view of the church structure and its effect upon the communicative role of women in ministry. The study employed a qualitative approach of conducting in-depth interviews. The findings indicated that men perceive the role of women in ministry to be supportive and helpful. Additionally, men hold fairly positive perceptions toward women in ministry excluding the idea of women as Pastors and Bishops. These perceptions found its roots in their biblical interpretation of Scriptures, religious practices, and cultural values. In addition, the findings indicated that interpretation of Scripture, the question of God's order for family and design, and religious and cultural practices serve as oppositions to women in ministry, particularly female pastors.
