Abstract/Summary:
Acknowledging a need to increase the knowledge base of Filipino culture in the United States, this study examined relationships between the primary research variables; acculturation, ethnic identity, and adherence to Asian cultural values among 128 Filipinos residing in the United States. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were performed on the primary research variables and demographic variables to explore differences in participants' mean scores. All of the demographic variables (sex, self-identity, generation, religious practice, place of birth, where they grew up, and highest educational level) were found to have main effects on acculturation. Four of the demographic variables (generation, religious practice, where they grew up, and place of birth) were found to have main effects on adherence to Asian cultural values. There were no main effects found for ethnic identity.;Pearson correlations were used to assess the relationships between the primary research variables. Acculturation and ethnic identity, and acculturation and adherence to Asian cultural values were found to be negatively related. Ethnic identity and adherence to Asian cultural values were found to be positively related. Regression analyses were utilized to assess the predictive qualities of acculturation on ethnic identity and adherence to Asian cultural values and to determine if participants responses differed by sex. Acculturation was found to be predictive of ethnic identity and adherence to Asian cultural values for the total sample. Although there were sex differences in levels of acculturation, with men reporting higher levels of acculturation than women, sex was not found to be a significant predictor of ethnic identity and adherence to Asian cultural values.
