Abstract/Summary:
Ethiopian women immigrants/refugees to the United States face a number of challenges. This qualitative phenomenological inquiry focuses on the acculturation experiences of eight women who entered the United States from 1989-2004 with their families. A literature review was conducted to explore the theoretical and research aspects of this topic. Data for the study were collected through open-ended interviews with each participant. Each interview was analyzed separately to identify emerging themes across four major questions that marked out, their background, the first year of their arrival, their perceptions of the current acculturation experience, and their relationship with spouses and children. The findings of this study are valuable to psychology professionals, social workers, counselors, schools, and Ethiopian community leaders who work with immigrant communities in particular.
