The dissertation's main goal is to arrive at a comprehensive checklist that one can use in comparing how different immigrant groups integrate into the destination society. The checklist will allow one to examine (even perhaps predict) retrospectively how earlier groups (Poles, Germans, Irish, Italians, etc) integrated into the U.S. and how current and future groups (Mexicans, Indians, etc.) are integrating. The comparison of migrants from China and from Taiwan provides a natural experiment for exploring the adequacy of the checklist. |
