Abstract/Summary:
This work, "A History of the Uganda-USA Relations 1962-2002" sets out to analyze the nature and progress of the interactions between the State of the USA and the State of Uganda over the period of forty years. It was inspired by the September 11, 2001 bombing of the World Trade Centre in New York City, USA which brought out the hostile attitude of some sections of the world towards the USA. The U.S. government called the bombing international terrorism.;The study identified a problem in the national character and racial attitudes of the two countries, the USA and Uganda and sought to establish how this problem affected or was reflected in the relations between the two nation-states. The problem centered on the differences in the political and economic characteristics, unequal national power and racial attitudes.;The study had three main objectives, namely: to establish the reasons why the USA cultivated and maintained relations with Uganda during the period 1962-2002; to establish the nature and characteristics of these relations; and to establish the image or reputation of USA in Uganda today.;The study used the retrospective and comparative methods in the collection, interpretation and analysis of information. Data were obtained from books, academic journals, newspapers, Uganda and U.S. government documents online, questionnaires and interviews with a sample selected from the public in Uganda.;The study established that the differences in national power capability and historical experience of the state, which also determined the national interests of the USA and Uganda, defined the nature of behavior of the two countries in the international system and towards one another. The relations between the U.S. and Uganda, during the period 1962-2002, were uneasy for much of the period studied, because the objectives of both countries were divergent. The divergence has been identified in ideology, racial attitudes, core national interests and the scope and focus of foreign policy. The application of realism by both countries in the international system in general and towards each other in particular ensured peaceful interaction in spite of divergence and uneasiness. Both the USA and Uganda behaved towards each other in line with the realism theory of international relations.
