Abstract/Summary:
The primary purpose of this case study was to identify and describe incidents of drugs, violence, crime and safety in two public middle schools and two public high schools in Sumter, South Carolina. This study utilized the case study design to explore a contemporary phenomenon that addressed three research questions via the use of survey data, archival data, discipline logs and interviews from two public middle school and two public high school principals in Sumter, South Carolina. This case study is descriptive and includes qualitative and quantitative information from the 2003-2004 School Crime Incident Report, discipline logs, principal interviews and a modified School Survey on Crime and Safety 2003-2004 from the aforementioned schools. The results indicated all four schools have experienced crime and violence and have implemented programs and policies to prevent or reduce crime and violence at their schools. The most violent crime reported for any school was physical attacks without a weapon.
