Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to understand experiences of high school student athletes, parents, and coaches as they participate in sports. Specifically, this study examined the relationships and roles associated with high school sport participants and what effect these relationships and roles had on high school sports experiences. This qualitative study included 18 recorded and transcribed interviews and 12 observations of student athletes, parents, and coaches from two northern, rural Minnesota communities.;Along with interviews and observations, other qualitative methodologies connected with phenomenological research were used; interview and observational data were organized into codes, categories, and assertions, leading to both recommendations and conclusions: High school sports is complicated for student athletes, parents, and coaches. The roles of adults, parents and coaches, directly affect the experience for the student athlete, yet many adults struggle to understand their role. Ironically, with a desire to express a passion for high school sports, many instead struggle to enjoy the experience.
