Abstract/Summary:
Some student affairs divisions have developed successful fundraising programs to maintain or enhance their level of service, while others engage in practices such as reducing the quality and/or quantity of services as a means of handling decreasing governmental support.;This study examined the relationship between development support characteristics and the amount of funds raised for student affairs divisions. Development support characteristics examined include placement of development officer, level of involvement in fundraising of the chief student affairs officer, level of involvement in fundraising of other senior student affairs officers, level of support from the president of the institution, type of institution, and size of the institution's endowment.;The findings of this study show that the amount of funds raised was significantly higher for divisions that had at least one part-time development officer reporting to the development office. Findings also showed that level of involvement of director or assistant/associate director of career services, director or assistant/associate director of student activities, and "others" as measured by the percentage of time spent on fundraising was related to the amount of funds raised. Regardless of the total number of officers and whether the officer was full-time or part-time, if the officer reported to student affairs more funds were raised. In addition, the higher the total number of development officers who are devoted to student affairs fundraising and the higher the number of other student affairs officers who have an active role in fundraising the higher the amount of funds raised. Finally, student affairs divisions that were engaged in a campaign reported raising more funds.
