Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this capstone project was to review best practices in arts integration, in conjunction with internship activities, to recommend direction for arts education in the Seattle Schools. Through action inquiry, associated with a leadership internship, I conducted three local school site visits and gathered qualitative data to analyze approaches to arts integration, based on literature, during the 2008--09 school year. Based on the analysis of the literature, and insights from observation, I created tools for educational leaders interested in arts integration for their school context(s). Implications for Seattle Public Schools and other districts that may be interested in increasing student learning, narrowing the achievement gap, and increasing student access to arts education through arts integration are also discussed.
