| Social, collaborative, interactive, and creative are all words that can be used to describe Web 2.0 technologies. Web 2.0 applications are some of the latest technologies to enter the classroom. Though students use these technologies outside of the classroom for everyday activities, students might not accept the use of or benefit from the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom. A modified version of a survey by Hartshorne and Ajjan (2009) was used in this descriptive quantitative study to examined students' perceptions of using Web 2.0 technologies to supplement in-class learning. The study examined students' perceptions of using Web 2.0 technologies based on gender, age, degree level, ethnicity, current income, and number of hour's technology is used per week. Based on the results of the survey, students reported that they perceived Web 2.0 technologies might be beneficial in the classroom to improve grades, improve course satisfaction, and help them learn more about the subject. While a majority of students reported that Web 2.0 technologies would be easy to use in the classroom, a number of students also questioned their abilities and knowledge to use Web 2.0 technologies to supplement in-class learning. In addition, a number of students reported instructors did not support their use of Web 2.0 technologies and instructors did not confirm the abilities and knowledge of students. Implications that might be consider in higher education institutions include: (a) selecting common Web 2.0 technologies to be used across the university; (b) additional training of staff, faculty, administration, and students; and (c) modeling the use of Web 2.0 technologies across the university. |
