Abstract/Summary:
The Differentiated Instruction staff development initiative was launched to address the diverse instructional needs in the Christina School District. Interviews of selected stakeholders revealed several goals subsequent evaluation questions for the initiative, but the two most central areas of concern are teachers' implementation of Differentiated Instruction and the resulting student achievement. An evaluation design was created that delineates how data will be collected to answer each of the stakeholders' evaluation questions. From this design, and based in the research, the evaluation tools to measure the implementation of Differentiated Instruction were created. Those tools include a District-wide survey, workshop survey, implementation matrix, classroom visit and lesson analysis protocols, walkthrough protocol, and interview protocols. The recommendations section of the paper describes procedures for field testing each of the evaluation tools and describes a three year implementation period that includes piloting the tools with selected schools in the first year to develop data analysis procedures and models of evaluation. Additional recommendations include more closely aligning professional development planning with professional development evaluation and establishing a Professional Development Oversight Task Force in the District.
