Abstract/Summary:
In October of 2003 Delaware Technical & Community College and the Small Business Development Center in conjunction with the State of Delaware commissioned a market feasibility study to determine whether a facility-based incubator would stimulate economic activity in Sussex County. There were several recommendations made in this study; however, the one that is covered in this executive position paper deals with the development of an associate degree program in entrepreneurship. Through literature research and interviews, the type of individuals who would most likely start a small business, the importance of small businesses, and the rates and reasons of failures for such businesses have been identified. Further research has identified courses of study that would be advantageous to small business owners to enable them to become successful. Through protocol established by various accrediting bodies for degree programs at Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens Campus, a proposed listing of courses was identified and is included.
