Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand how leadership development was perceived by Air Force Materiel Command civilian squadron directors. The lived experiences of 20 current or former Air Force Materiel Command squadron directors were explored. Digitally recorded and transcribed interviews were used with a modified van Kaam analysis method to explore the phenomenon of Air Force civilian squadron leadership development. Seven themes emerged with the core finding that civilian squadron leaders are not prepared for squadron leadership. Air Force civilian leadership development necessitates a structured process with the right mix of mentoring, career broadening, rotational assignments, and leadership development courses tailored to the needs of each individual.
