Abstract/Summary:
This study highlights the lack of studies that connect emotional intelligence to leadership. There are numerous studies of leadership and several studies about emotional intelligence however, there are few studies that connect emotional intelligence to leadership. The study utilized the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) survey and the scored data set for data collection. A total of 1,019 school superintendents in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio were asked to participate in the study. A researcher-developed theoretical framework was used to graphically demonstrate a connection of emotional intelligence to transformational leadership. The theoretical framework consists of transformational leadership traits and the scale and subscale components of the EQ-i survey. An effective return rate of 13% was sufficient to develop a connection of emotional intelligence to transformational leadership. While this study established a connection of emotional intelligence to transformational leadership, it did not demonstrate any effect of age, race, or gender.
