Abstract/Summary:
o stay competitive in an international market, multinational companies often must send their employees overseas on temporary assignments. Failures of expatriate assignments can have very negative individual and organizational consequences (Aycan, 1997; Webb, 1996). One of the most common causes for failures of overseas assignments is the inability of the expatriate to adjust to the host culture. This study is concerned with identifying factors that are important in cross-cultural adjustment. The first goal of this study was to examine the relationships between personality characteristics, various types of cross-cultural adjustment, and intent to remain for the duration of graduate studies. Another important goal of this study was to examine how objective fit between the values that characterize the host culture and the values endorsed by the individual expatriate relates to the dimensions of cross-cultural adjustment.;An international graduate student sample (N=553) was recruited via internet.
