Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation describes a software tool developed for estimating resilient modulus of subgrade material, predicting field moisture content for different combinations of environmental and pavement related factors, and modifying resilient modulus values based on changes in moisture contents. Subgrade resilient modulus is a key factor for use in mechanistic-empirical pavement design methods. However, there are many implementation issues related to resilient modulus testing that need to be resolved. In this dissertation the author attempts to provide some alternative solutions.; In this research, expert system approaches were used to develop a computer program that is capable of analyzing data entered by users, and to provide recommendations and estimations to meet different scenarios. The information entered by the user is first examined for its reasonableness and accuracy. Then, proper estimation models, of which there are many integrated into the system, and data searching processes are initiated and results are evaluated based on how well the data is meeting the limitations existing during the model's original development environment. At the same time, proper recommendations and comments are given to users in order to help them find the most suitable answer for their needs. In the end, engineers can determine the resilient modulus and field moisture content based on the most appropriate descriptions of the project. The ultimate goal is to have a user-friendly system that can give pavement engineers proper advice during their parameter selection process of any pavement design project.
