Recent research suggests that understanding clients' religious and cultural beliefs has a considerable impact on therapeutic rapport and outcome (Turnbow, 2008). When using cognitive behavioral couples therapy, these types of beliefs may be neglected due to a narrow focus on cognitive phenomenon as opposed to cultural variables. Mormon couples possess a unique belief system that influences the way they perceive the world and respond to therapeutic techniques. Thus, therapists practicing cognitive behavioral couples therapy (CBCT) may not be equipped to provide effective therapy to Mormon clients without possessing an understanding of their unique cultural and religious beliefs and adapting their techniques accordingly. This dissertation will adapt current cognitive and behavioral couples techniques to Mormon belief systems and suggest cultural considerations when working with a Mormon couple.
