Abstract/Summary:
This participatory action research study determined counseling interns' experiences and perceptions of a creative drawing activity in group supervision. Eighteen students in three levels of internship group supervision classes were asked to draw a representation of their internship experiences on a pre-drawn graphic outline of an Intern Figure. Data were collected through the sharing of the interns' art, a focus group process, and individual journal entries. Utilizing a creative arts drawing activity allowed the students to express powerful emotions, increased reflection, and led to further insight into their internship experiences. Participation in this qualitative study decreased students' resistance to utilizing creative art interventions and increased the students' willingness to employ art-making with clients. The creative arts drawing activity proved to be a meaningful reflective pedagogical experience that increased group interaction and provided closure.
