Abstract/Summary:
Research has shown that six thousand veterans complete suicide each year, with veterans at nearly twice the risk of death by suicide than non-veteran. It is believed that for every one completed suicide, 25 attempts to suicide have been made. In this study, grounded theory methodology was used to examine the process of suicide in nine male military veterans who have attempted suicide within the last 5 years. The veterans participated in semi-structured interviews, responding to open ended questions designed to elicit rich data about their lived experiences with attempted suicide. Participants shared what they felt and thought about, and the various actions that they took leading toward and up to the attempt to end their own lives. Themes of loss, negative emotional states, avoidance coping strategies, contemplation, attempt and recovery emerged and were categorized into a temporal ordering of Pre-Attempt, Attempt and Post-Attempt .
