Abstract/Summary:
The school superintendency is a complex role, presenting a myriad of challenges. Few aspire to this role and existing research suggests that those who do might be inadequately prepared, necessitating the examination of preparation and support opportunities for those aspiring to and enacting the role.; Six new superintendents, serving less than three years in their first superintendency and representing rural, urban and suburban districts participated in interviews regarding the challenges faced and their preparation and support to surmount those challenges. Additionally, 50 out 100 randomly sampled new, experienced, and veteran superintendents took part in a survey regarding their initial and subsequent superintendencies, and perceptions regarding challenges faced, preparation received, and recommendations for support. Participants were asked to encapsulate the role metaphorically, offering further insight into the complexity of the role. The results provide insight into the area of superintendent training and contribute to the identification of a core set of skills that enhance the marketability and effectiveness of emerging educational leaders.; The findings of this study indicate that the superintendency is a complex role requiring a variety of skills for a role that often appears chaotic and unpredictable. Thus, while modifications in existing preparation programs might better prepare individuals for some of the identified challenges in the role, it is unreasonable to expect that they serve as a panacea for training. The provision for practical applications of theory is one suggested area for improvement in graduate programs. Skill specific training addresses identified needs and might be provided through professional development activities. The critical nature of professional relationships emerges as a forum for ongoing support for those in the role, capitalizing on the experiences of colleagues, while brainstorming solutions to common problems. Two networking structures are examined to address the need for support, in the forms of The Cafe Model and web-based networking.; While the challenges continue to develop in complexity and the needs for improved preparation and continued support in the role are recognized, what remains essential is the fact that those serving in the role remain committed to it over time.
