Abstract/Summary:
Leaders cannot rely on how they operated in the past but need to bring all their psychic capacities to the ever-changing work environment. A worldview anchored in the rational perspective dominates Western culture. This dissertation addresses the workplace imbalance due to the predominance of rational capacities over imaginal capacities. To address this pervasive problem, leaders need coaching that incorporates the development of both rational and imaginal capacities for metaphorical diversity and the re-enchantment of leadership.; The Integral Inquiry Coaching practice, introduced in this dissertation, enhances leadership by incorporating imaginal capacities through engagement of evocative metaphors, images, and creative modalities in the practice of leadership development coaching. The original theoretical model integrates imaginal and rational capacities by synthesizing the participatory research method of action inquiry with a Jungian archetypal model of development integrating masculine and feminine. Stated metaphorically, the Integral Inquiry Coaching practice uses the action inquiry method to leap beyond rationally held beliefs, followed by a plunge into the leader's imaginal capacities, where blended insights emerge from an integrated perspective for innovative and effective action.; This hybrid theoretical dissertation is an exploration, not evaluation, of three components: theory, application, and exemplars. The integral theoretical model is applied to the Integral Inquiry Coaching and a university curriculum to teach the coaching practice. Exemplars are drawn from the class participants' stories. The researcher's heuristic reflections unfold through a parallel journey to harvest his imaginal gifts, illustrating the integrative process.
