Abstract/Summary:
This study represents an analysis of student success rates for college courses representing different disciplines and taught in an online format to student success rates in corresponding courses taught in a traditional lecture format. Furthermore, success rate differences between online and traditional courses were compared across disciplines.; Success rates for both online and traditionally taught classes were calculated for each of five semesters included in the study. Student success was measured as a function of total number of students enrolled minus the total number of student withdrawals and minus the total student failures (i.e., final grade less than "C") divided by total number of students originally enrolled in the course. It was found via ANOVA or Mann-Whitney U that there were statistically significant differences in the online and traditional student success rates (i.e., traditional success rates were higher than online success rates) for Principles of Accounting I, Principles of Accounting II, Business Statistics, General Biology I, General Biology II, Principles of Economics I, Principles of Economics II, English Composition I, English Composition II, American Literature I, American Literature II, English Literature I, English Literature II, Human Growth and Development, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, and Business Calculus I. There were no statistically significant differences between online and traditional student success rates for Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, American History I, American History II, and The Real Number System.
