Abstract/Summary:
This research study examined and explored ways in which the transition plan assisted with the process for high school senior special education students with learning disabilities as they prepared to transition from high school into the community college of their choice. Within this research study, support services at an Illinois high school and Illinois community colleges were observed from the educational experiences, perceptions, and perspectives of the high school senior special education students with learning disabilities who graduated and attended a semester of community college in 2011. The research strategy of this study was to closely observe the transition plan implemented with the academic accommodations and services for the special education student with learning disabilities attending a community college. This study used a qualitative case study research strategy. The selection of the individual questionnaire and pre- and post-interview format allowed for complete and accurate data collection. The questionnaire was designed to allow respondents the opportunity to offer personal opinions, experiences, and meaningful insight concerning this research study. This research study sought to determine a comprehensive understanding of the transition process for high school senior special education students with learning disabilities who attended a community college, their perceived educational experiences, and higher education institution academic accommodations and academic services when they enrolled in the community college. The findings indicated the future challenges of postsecondary and secondary institutions expanding as well as improving upon existing transition plans, academic accommodations, and academic services for high school senior special education students with learning disabilities by supporting best practices, which will appropriately address the results of this research study. Recommendations for future research indicate the impact of transition planning for special education students with learning disabilities through the implication of professional development and trainings to increase a successful transition for special education students with learning disabilities transitioning into a community college.
