A non-experimental, causal-comparative study using ex post facto data of Beacon Middle School students from the 2012-2013 school year was performed. This study was designed to gain a greater understanding of the overall academic success as defined in this study by grade point average, attendance, and discipline referrals received. Data from the 2012-2013 school year (64 at-risk student-athletes) were studied to determine whether students who were currently participating in a sport (in-season at-risk student-athletes) had a statistically significant difference in grade point average, days absent, and discipline referrals received compared to at-risk student-athletes who were not currently participating in an after school sport (out-of-season). There was no statistically significant difference found between the means of the two groups for grade point average, attendance, or discipline referrals received.
