Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the psychometric properties of recent and revised intelligence tests with norms for preschoolers using a consistent set of agreed upon criteria (Bracken, 1987; Flanagan & Alfonso 1995; Alfonso & Flanagan, 2008). Historically, measures of intelligence have been reviewed independently and evaluated under inconsistent criteria. Few studies have completed systematic reviews of measures of intelligence for preschoolers following an accepted and uniform set of criteria from which to evaluate the technical characteristics of intelligence batteries. Bracken along with Flanagan and Alfonso are among the only researchers who have completed comprehensive reviews of the psychometric and qualitative characteristics of intelligence tests for preschoolers. The present study used the criteria set forth by Flanagan and Alfonso to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the WPPSI-III, WJ III COG, SB5, KABC-II and the DAS-II. Results demonstrated that test-retest reliability, test floors, and item gradients are among the weaker technical characteristics. Additionally, at large, test authors have not structured their discussions of validity to be aligned with most recent recommendations of the Standards. Overall, the WPPSI-III and DAS-II are among the better instruments for children within the preschool age range because they most often proved to be more psychometrically sound when compared to the others. Practitioners should however, be aware of each test's individual strengths and weaknesses as these technical characteristics should be carefully considered before selecting an instrument for use with preschoolers.
