Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of lean manufacturing principles with technology and the perceived impact it has on organizational performance in terms of quality, cost, and response time. Due to the declining market share of U.S. automobile manufacturers caused by increases in foreign automobile sales, it was hypothesized that the integration of lean manufacturing principles with the latest advances in technology would increase U.S. automobile manufacturers' ability to compete. The study employed a mixed methodology where both quantitative and qualitative inquiries were utilized simultaneously in an effort to test theory and acquire new knowledge while utilizing statistical methods to validate results. Although quantitative significance was not established in the Pearson Correlation Coefficient test, the qualitative results strongly support that there is a relationship between the level of technology integrated with lean manufacturing principles (independent variable) and organizational performance in terms of quality, cost, response time, productivity, morale, attendance, safety and ergonomics, inventory control and human resources (dependent variables). The study was conducted utilizing the Lean Manufacturing Integrated with Technology Performance Questionnaire (LMIWTP) developed by the researcher that measured the opinions of top executives and selected employees responsible for the implementation of lean manufacturing principles and technological advancements. Twenty-eight technological advancements were identified by the study, and all validated as being used in the domestic automobile manufacturing industry. A total of 15 lean manufacturing principles/initiatives were identified as being in use in the domestic automobile industry.
