Abstract/Summary:
Nonprofit organizations are a vital part of regional economies. Entrepreneurs establish these organizations within regions based on the overall economic climate and the opportunities and needs that exist. After establishing a conceptual foundation for nonprofit entrepreneurship, which is lacking in the literature, this dissertation provides an analysis of nonprofit entrepreneurship in two U.S. metropolitan regions: Atlanta and Baltimore. The purpose of the dissertation is to measure the impact of nonprofit entrepreneurship on a dynamic and growing technology region compared to a more mature, established, and less technology-intensive region. The findings of this research add to the conceptual literature on nonprofit entrepreneurship, inform policymakers and regional leaders on the contribution of nonprofits to economic growth and development, and increase the understanding of the economic environment within which nonprofit entrepreneurial activity flourishes.
