Abstract/Summary:
Technology Acceptance Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and its precursor Theory of Reasoned Action have received wide spread validation for explaining many technological innovations related to attitude and behavior where the individual is autonomous in deciding to rejector accept the innovation. Increasing evidence suggests that these traditional frameworks neglect the realities of implementing technological innovations within organizations, where the decision to adopt the new technology is made at the organization level, rather than by the targeted users. Under these conditions, which correspond to "contingent authority adoption decisions", an authority makes the initial decision to adopt and mandates adoption of the new technology by the targeted users.;The objective of this research was to develop a model of innovation adoption and diffusion that adequately explains adoption behaviors under contingent authority adoption decisions in the organizational setting. The proposed model is composed of both evaluative variables which depict users' opinions regarding the adoption behavior and contextual variables which depict the adoption environment.;The organization's climate for implementation was found to be a key predictor of how targeted users perceived the innovation's attributes, as well as subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. Three innovation attributes were found to be key predictors of targeted users' attitudes toward the new technology. Attitude and subjective norm were found to be key predictors of individuals' intention to use the new technology. The results of this research offer important practical implications for managers who introduce new technologies in the workplace under contingent authority adoption decisions.;Key Words: Contingent Authority Adoption Decision, Mandated Adoption, Behavioral Intention, implementation Climate, Innovation Attributes, Procedural Fairness...
