Abstract/Summary:
Pseudorotaxanes containing tetramer aniline as a guest molecule and crown ethers or a β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as host molecules were studied. For the system having β-CD as a host, the existence of a pseudorotaxane can be observed from X-ray, DSC, FTIR and NMR.; The presence of β-CD affects the monolayer properties of the mixture of β-CD and tetramer aniline. The more β-CD in the mixture the less coarea is observed, which may be caused by some dissolution of the complex. An attempt to make an ultra thin film of the mixture of β-CD and tetramer aniline via the LB technique was not successful. Monolayer stability is a major problem.; Two crown ethers, dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8), were used as a host molecule to form a complex with tetramer aniline in the emeraldine base form as a guest.; The coprecipitate of DB18C6 and tetramer aniline does not form a complex judging from x-ray diffraction patterns. The presence of the DB18C6, which cannot form a monolayer at the air-water interface, in the mixture with tetramer aniline causes a slight increase in the coarea of the mixture.; DB24C8 has three distinctive polymorphs that have distinct physical properties, e.g. melting or transition temperature and crystal structure. X-ray, DSC, and FTIR can be used to distinguish the polymorphs.; A coprecipitate of the DB24C8 and tetramer aniline shows that it forms a complex as confirmed by DSC and X-ray. The result from DSC suggests that in the solid state the stoichiometric ratio of the complex is 2 to 1 (DB24C8 to tetramer aniline).; Single crystals of pure DB24C8, an undoped complex of DB24C8 with tetramer aniline, and a doped complex have been analysed using a four-circle X-ray diffractometer.; Although the DB24C8 cannot form a good monolayer, its appearance in a mixed-monolayer with tetramer aniline increases the coarea of the mixture. The isotherm data suggests that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex as a monolayer at the air/water interface is 1.4 to 1 (DB24C8 to tetramer aniline). Furthermore, the stability of the monolayer increases with increasing the amount of DB24C8.; A multilayer film of the mixture of DB24C8 and tetramer aniline can be fabricated via horizontal deposition. The conductivity of the doped film is 300 times higher than that of the undoped.
