This study of the American Smelting and Refining Company, which monopolized the Mexican mining industry from 1900 through 1925, follows the course of the company during the late Porfiriato, the belligerent phase of the Mexican Revolution, and the beginning Reconstruction in the socioeconomic and political development of an emerging Mexico.;It examines the effects of evolving technology, cyclic market demands, international financial crises, and shifting political and economic relations between successive Mexican and United States government on the course of the American Smelting and Refining Company.;And, by evaluating the strategies through which the company survived, profited, and expanded, under the direction of the Guggenheims, it contributes to the understanding of the economic importance of the metallurgical industry in the unstable milieu of underdeveloped and revolution wracked Mexico.
