Abstract/Summary:
In this dissertation, the integration of Battery Energy Storage with a Static Synchronous Serial Compensator, or SSSC, for power system applications is compared to the SSSC, StatCom/BESS, StatCom and UPFC. Three main contributions are made to the area of various FACTS and FACTS/BESS applications in power systems.; The first contribution is to better understand the steady-state characteristics of the SSSC and SSSC/BESS. The first section focuses on the steady-state features. The output voltage range, compensated output power, and operating modes are characterized for the SSSC and SSSC/BESS at the sending end of the transmission line. Performance indices for quantifying the compensation effects of various FACTS combinations are developed and used to compare the dynamic performance of the StatCom, StatCom/BESS, SSSC, SSSC/BESS, and UPFC systems. The proposed performance indices are experimentally verified in a laboratory two-bus test system with a midpoint FACTS/BESS or FACTS device.; The second contribution is to develop control strategies for the SSSC/BESS and SSSC for active and reactive power control. The steady-state approximation method is used to obtain the PQ decoupled power flow control scheme for the SSSC/BESS and similar constrained control scheme for the SSSC. The behavior of SSSC/BESS and SSSC under a pre-defined reference step change and system load disturbance in a two-bus test system are examined. The control schemes used for the StatCom and StatCom/BESS are also covered.; The third contribution is the design and implementation of a PC-DSP-based unified control system for a multi-use FACTS and FACTS/BESS prototype. The developed system provides the necessary hardware and software environment to test and verify many of the proposed FACTS configurations and controls. This system is fully described in the last section.; Both the analytical results and experimental results show that by providing both the active and reactive power compensation, the FACTS/BESS controllers offer improved performance over FACTS-only controllers. They also offer comparable performance to the UPFC. The StatCom/BESS controller provides the best voltage control and the SSSC/BESS provides the best oscillation damping control.
