Abstract/Summary:
Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) are being introduced in the market. In CVT, the startup element and motion reversing element have a very low usage in a typical duty cycle. But, the cost of these elements amount to around 30--35% of the total transmission costs. The good engineering direction in this case is to combine the two functions. This can achieve significant cost and space reduction as same components are used to perform multiple functions.; This dissertation analyzes the use of stator motion to achieve the reverse motion. This analysis shows that, with a four-element torque converter, torque multiplication is possible in both the forward and reverse directions, thus providing an acceptable launch characteristics.; This dissertation illustrates the methodology of the analytical, numerical and experimental analysis techniques used in the analysis of various torque converter configurations.
