Abstract/Summary:
The work presented in this paper is the characterization of a shielded twisted pair transmission line. In particular, the charge distributions on the surfaces of the conductors, and the capacitances of the structure are found for quasistatic conditions.;Two independent models are developed. The first solution presented is a Method of Moments model, based on the direct relation between potential and charge density. The second solution developed is based on determining the potential distribution from Laplace's equation. The gradient of the potential distribution is evaluated to find the normal component of the electric field at the surfaces of the conductors. The development of each model is discussed in some detail. These models are compared on the basis of result accuracy, geometric limitations, and simplicity.;The results of the modeling are verified experimentally. The experimental procedures are again discussed in some detail.;The capacitance found can be used as one of the four characterizing parameters of the transmission line model. The inductance can then be found with a knowledge of the geometry and the constitutive parameters of the dielectric filling the cable.
